Case Study:

Royal Derby Hospital

Three New Cath Labs

Cardiac Catheter Theaters

Bailey Construction has successfully completed the design and construction of three new state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories at Royal Derby Hospital for University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, working in partnership with main contractor Skanska.

The scheme involved the infill of an existing internal courtyard within the live hospital estate to create an entirely new clinical suite, housing three fully operational catheter theatres complete with the latest interventional cardiac imaging equipment. The completed laboratories are now treating patients, delivering life-changing cardiac care to the local community.

A fundamental requirement of the project was the provision of comprehensive radiation protection throughout all three theaters. This encompassed full lead-lining to walls, floors and ceilings, together with the design and construction of a bespoke radiation roof cap, ensuring complete compliance with medical physics requirements and protecting staff and patients in all surrounding clinical areas.

The structural solution demanded exceptional precision. Mini piling was installed to the new courtyard slab and a bespoke steel frame was designed and constructed to ultra-low movement tolerances, ensuring the ceiling-mounted specialist imaging equipment remained within its stringent positional limits throughout the lifetime of the building.

Alongside the theatres, a full suite of ancillary clinical accommodation was created, including medical offices, multi-disciplinary team (MDT) rooms, and UPS and backup power rooms. All works were carried out in close coordination with the Trust, ensuring the continuity of live theatre and ward operations in the immediately adjacent areas throughout the entire programme.

This project further demonstrates Bailey Construction’s expertise in delivering highly technical, specialist schemes within live NHS hospital environments.

“I would like to take this opportunity to give a big thank you to the Bailey Construction team on a project that has had its challenges and required considerable weekend and out-of-hours working. No ask was too big and everything was always accepted with a smile and a can-do attitude. The team on site were always courteous, professional and accommodating to both staff and patients throughout the entire project. Dale and Craig’s attention to detail has meant the handover of areas back into the PFI has been straightforward, with the quality of workmanship remarked upon by all. Having good contractors who understand the workings of a live hospital and the challenges that may arise is pivotal to the safety and well being of everyone involved. I hope to work with the Bailey Construction team again in the future£
